Gloucestershire Archives accessions, January-March 2024

It is that time of the year again when we look at the accessions of the first quarter of the year, January to March 2024. The accessions can be from any place, person or organisation in Gloucestershire and South Gloucestershire.

In total we added 246 new accessions to our online catalogue during the first three months of 2024. That includes numerous publications and material, which are now part of our Local History Collection. Some, who have visited us before or live locally, will be aware that the Heritage Hub was formerly a school, the Kingsholm Infants and Senior School. One of the new accessions is a memoir of a former pupil giving us an interesting insight into what it was like going to school here and growing up in and around Alvin Street in the 1950s and 1960s. Staying in Kingsholm, we also very recently received a copy of a new book, 150 years of Gloucester Rugby, which gives a brief history of every season played from 1873 until 2023 with records of all matches played. Another interesting publication is Wilson’s China, a Century on, which takes the reader to different places in China mentioned by the explorer and plant collector Ernest Henry Wilson on his journey in the early 1900s.

Archive collections added in recent weeks include the Vizard Family Papers from the archives of Penley’s of Dursley, which include the correspondence and the wills of family members and genealogical papers dating from 1855 to 1915, the Jacqueline Dench Papers and Diaries, which include many photographs and sketches, and the Percy Duggan Cycle Dairies, which include two volumes of diaries of cycle trips taken around the South-West between 1894 and 1914. We also regularly add newsletters and magazines from various clubs and parishes to our collections, such as the newsletters of the Stroud Vintage Transport and Engine Club (from 2002 to 2023), newsletters of the Friends of Robinswood Hill (from 2009 to 2020), and the Churchdown Wine Circle newsletters (from 1980 to 2019). New parish magazines included in the recent accessions period came from Cranham Parish, St.George’s Brockworth, Up Hatherley Parish, Wickwar Parish and Highnam Parish.
