Christmas comes early with Heritage Lottery award

We’re delighted to announce the Heritage Lottery Fund is giving us £1.1 million towards our “For the Record” partnership project.

This means we can now access extra funding from key partners, trusts and foundations, as well as generous donations from the public.  Finding out before the holidays gives us even more reason to celebrate all the project has achieved so far!

“For the Record” will improve how we gather, keep and share the documented history of the historic county, now and in the future, and we’ve already made important steps forward.  It has been developed over the last few years by:

  • Gloucestershire County Council
  • Gloucestershire Family History Society
  • Gloucestershire Constabulary
  • South Gloucestershire Council
  • the diocese of Gloucester
  • the Friends of Gloucestershire Archives
  • and community groups across Gloucestershire and South Gloucestershire.

Gloucestershire’s archival treasures are important pieces of the jigsaw of local memories, experiences and achievements.  We want to look after and add to these irreplaceable resources, and help local people to do the same with their own records, so that together we can preserve our stories for future generations.

Our Heritage Hub – to be housed at Gloucestershire Archives’ site just off Alvin Street, Gloucester – will be a unique community space where everyone can learn to care for, interpret and celebrate their personal and shared history.  We’ll also be supporting partnerships, and offering training and volunteering opportunities for individuals, groups and communities across Gloucestershire and South Gloucestershire.

We’ve got a lot to do to move the project forward now that we’ve got our base funding, and we’re excited by the opportunities “For the Record” will bring in 2016 and beyond.

Before then, we’re taking a little break to relax and think about how we’ll properly celebrate in January.  We hope you’ll be able to join us then.

Happy holidays!
