Gloucestershire Archives – an accredited archive service

Gloucestershire Archives is celebrating success after being praised for the quality of its service.

Accredited Archive Service logoThe archives service provided by Gloucestershire County Council has been awarded Accredited Archive Service Status under a new UK wide quality standard for private and public sector archives.

Assessors said it offers a great deal for a wide range of visitors and commended its excellent leadership and management, and its approach to development, planning, partnership building, volunteering and sustainability.

These highlights are all evident in For The Record, the Archives’ innovative partnership project to gather, keep and share the heritage of local communities, making it as accessible as possible for current and future generations.

The Accreditation Standard recognises good performance in all areas of archive services and is the national standard for gauging performance, recognising achievement and driving improvement.

Heather Forbes, Head of Information Management and Archives said

“We have a pioneering approach to providing a quality service and are delighted to have passed with flying colours.

“The assessors also acknowledged the benefits of our joint Information Management and Archives service. This set-up allows us to look after Gloucestershire County Council’s current records and manage their lifecycle, eventually selecting and keeping those that should be added to the county’s historic records.

“This allows people to see the big picture when it comes to Gloucestershire’s heritage.”

Councillor Ray Theodoulou, Deputy Leader of Gloucestershire County Council said:

“Staff at Gloucestershire Archives work with a wide range of partners and volunteers and they can all be very proud of this achievement.

“Having accredited status shows we’re meeting clearly defined national standards.

“The council is supporting the For the Record project, which helped to secure this great success and is paving the way for it to continue.”
